Throwing sparks at GTA Finals – Buttonwillow Raceway

Some builders and racers develop a certain chassis for a while and then they take what they’ve learned and move on to a new chassis, so their timeline of growth in motorsport involves multiple cars. While I’ve had the opportunity through Goodwin Racing and Singular Motorsports to play with many other cars, for my personal racing journey I’ve stuck with the same 1990 Miata I began with, and instead of changing cars as I grow as a fabricator and driver, I’ve stripped this car down to the bones and rebuilt it anew a few times over.

The evolutionary stages of this car are easily separated into three overarching “generations”. Each spans several years, and I’m constantly improving the car, so if one zooms in there might have been several versions of a certain part of the car within one generation, but the overall philosophy and focus behind the car can be split into three fairly distinct stages.

Gen 1 spanned from 2010 (this car’s first time on track) through 2015. During this time it had a turbo on the original 1.6L, and I was racing in the Miata Challenge series. The car’s final competition in this form was GTA Superlap Battle at Buttonwillow in 2014. After that, it was stripped down to the chassis and reimagined.

Gen 2 was born with the incorporation of the LFX engine, and a complete rebuild of the rest of the car during that time. It spans 2015-2019, with the build taking from 2015 to mid-2017 and then racing from mid-2017 through 2019. The final competition was again GTA Finals at Buttonwillow, this time in 2019. With an eye on the future, I traveled to Australia to watch World Time Attack Challenge, and returned with a fresh vision for the car.

Gen 3 is in process now. In early 2020 the car was once again stripped down to a bare chassis and every system on the car is being reevaluated and remade based on what’s been learned over the last few years of racing. More power, more tire, more aero, better electronics, stronger drivetrain. Keep track of the latest progress in the Build Blog.
